Heroes on the Water: FAST FACTS

WHAT?

Heroes on the Water helps wounded warriors relax, rehabilitate and reintegrate through kayak fishing and the outdoors.

Guided kayak fishing excursions, which include adaptive kayaks and equipment as needed, give injured troops an opportunity to habg out with other fisherman, take control of their world from the helm of their kayak, and learn the ropes of kayak fishing - a skill that lasts a lifetime.

WHO?

Started at Brooke Army Medical Center in 2007, Heroes on the Water (HOW) now serves military personnel at other U.S. Army Warrior Transitions Battalions, the Mrine Wounded Warrior Regiment, Airforce Wounded Warrior, and Navy Safe Harbor, as well as VA medical and rehab facilities arount the country and medically retired veterans. Over 3,100 Wounded Warriors have participated since 2007.

25 Chapter Coordinators work with the injured military personnel, the Medical Center staff, and an army of willing volunteers, including members of many Kayak Fishing Forums around the country and others dedicated to the mission.

WHY?

"Spend a day on the water with a group of soldiers, and you will understand the passion behind this program," commented Jim Dolan, HOW national coordinator. "The injured soldiers are literally captains of their own kayaks - moving around on their own at their own pace, experiencing nature up close, and earning bragging rights for their catch of the day. Kayak fishing is therapeutic for anyone, but particularly for military personnel recovering from injuries and trauma. Our mission is to give these heroes a chance to enjoy a challenging outdoor sport that allows them to decompress from the stresses related to combat and from the physical and mental rigors of rehabilitation and join the kayak fishing band of brothers."
