A Hero on the Water

The primary goal of the program is to assist the injured service members with their physical and mental recovery by introducing them to the therapeutic qualities of fishing from kayaks. The program allows the participants a chance to decompress from the stresses associated with combat and the physical rigors of rehabilitation. Participants enjoy these benefits while on guided fishing trips held at various locations around the country.

Dalton has been kayak fishing for seven years. He is sponsored by Ocean Kayaks.

"I do a lot of kayak fishing and it's great. I was in a tournament in Milwaukee last year against the power boats and I caught the biggest fish, a 24-pound king salmon on Lake Michigan.

"Kayak fishing is just so much more relaxing and peaceful. You can get to places that power boats just cannot get to. It was seven years ago when I buddy and I were thinking about getting a powerboat with downriggers and everything. Instead, we read about people on the west coast fishing from kayaks and we ordered a couple of kayaks. We went fishing in the Sleeping Bear Dunes area, and were just nailing salmon from our kayaks. That's when we decided we had to let everyone in on the fun. That's when I started michigankayakfishing.com."

He's living in Wisconsin and works as a district manager for Ecolab. His parents, Roger and Carol Dalton, reside in Harrison Township.
